Both films are directed by Gisaburō Sugii, and they sit in Animation territory. If that's the register that drew you to Jack et le haricot magique, the second film will land in a comparable space — through a different lens.
What Le Roman de Genji is
Here's one for the high-culture crowd. A prince cannot control himself, and begins an affair with his father's wife. This sets him off on a lifetime of searching for fulfillment in the arms of other women. It probably looked amazing at the time.
