If you loved Das Geisterhaus, try Les Misérables
Eine Brücke zwischen einem Film, den du schon gesehen hast, und einem, den kaum jemand kennt. Das teilen sie, und was der zweite macht, was der erste nicht macht.
Was sie teilen
Both films are directed by Bille August, and they both carry the bittersweet, tender mood tags, and they sit in Drama / Romance territory. If that's the register that drew you to Das Geisterhaus, the second film will land in a comparable space — through a different lens.

What Les Misérables is
Here's a film that really wants you to know it's adapted from Victor Hugo. Jean Valjean, having served hard time for stealing bread, is hounded for decades by the unyielding Javert. Eventually Valjean gets mixed up in some student uprisings. It's a solid adaptation, provided you've never read the book.
