You wake up in a quiet valley when a meteor blazes down like a falling star and lands in the hills. The townsfolk gather around the smoldering crater that evening. A day later the hole starts to smoke and the ground trembles as machines crawl out, bigger than tanks and unstoppable by any weapon you’ve got. The first Martian war machine rises from the smoke and your radio crackles with static before going dead forever. The film was made when America still believed its cities were safe and its defenses were absolute.
