If you loved The Assassin, try Three Times

A bridge between a film you've already seen and one most people haven't. Three Times has roughly 5.4× fewer votes than The Assassin — it's a deeper cut, not a mainstream recommendation. Here's what they share, and what the second one does that the first one doesn't.

What they share

Both films are directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, and they sit in Drama territory. If that's the register that drew you to The Assassin, the second film will land in a comparable space — through a different lens.

What Three Times is

Hou Hsiao-hsien seemingly enjoys a romantic challenge. The film presents three separate love stories set in Taiwan across 1966, 1911, and 2005. It is a handsome triptych, to be sure.
