New Mexico dawn, 1954. A rancher’s pickup finds a lone picnic basket gutted by pincers in the dust. Arthropods the size of locomotives chew through cinderblock; a little girl speaks in screams that aren’t hers. A skeptical entomologist, his daughter, a trooper who knows ants from holes, and a G-man who still thinks communists built this will have to pry open a nest beneath the Los Alamos water tower before the prairie swarms.
