If you loved Dr. Akagi, try Endless Desire
A bridge between a film you've already seen and one most people haven't. Here's what they share, and what the second one does that the first one doesn't.
What they share
Both films are directed by Shōhei Imamura, and they sit in Comedy / Drama territory. If that's the register that drew you to Dr. Akagi, the second film will land in a comparable space — through a different lens.
What Endless Desire is
Imamura takes a darkly comic look at postwar desperation. A quintet of misfits attempts to unearth a stash of morphine buried beneath a butcher shop. Turns out, sharing is not caring, especially when hard drugs are involved.
